Looking Ahead to the
Met Gala, 2025
The first Monday in May is fast approaching, so let’s explore this year’s theme, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style. More specifically, the dress code is “Tailored For You” – a nod to the museum exhibit’s focus on menswear and suiting.
This year’s red carpet outfits will be all about the formative role of fashion, specifically sartorial style, which has taken in shaping Black identities.
The Met calls out 12 characteristics central to “Superfine”: Ownership, Presence, Distinction, Disguise, Freedom, Champion, Respectability, Jook, Heritage, Beauty, Cool and Cosmopolitan. Disguise is a study of the ability for clothes to conceal, which presents an opportunity for our favorite androgynous and gender fluid brands (like Celine, Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney) to take center stage.
One can only hope to see a continuation of this impeccable limited-edition line come May.
Some of The Campus Edit’s top picks for designers to pay attention to are Polo Ralph Lauren, LaQuan Smith, and Botter – all of whom are featured in the exhibit itself. Not only is Ralph Lauren an editor favorite, but the brand came out with a collection in 2022 in collaboration with Spelman and Morehouse colleges highlighting the timeless fashion of historically Black colleges.
Beauty, as an aspect of Black identity, recognizes the confidence and fabulous fashions of Black men that came from the 70s and 80s; Namely the introduction of draped leather, lace, ruffles, and sequins to wardrobes. It’ll be exciting to see if Prada and Miu Miu, two fashion houses constantly displaying innovative use of embellishment, bring this notion to their looks.

Eyes are also on Bottega Veneta, whose collections are always a masterclass in leather work, for intricate draped outfits.

This will be
The Met’s
first exhibit featuring
menswear in
two decades.
The 2025 Met Gala Committee is full of fashion icons, including: Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, and A$AP Rocky (and as ever, we’ll be watching out for Rihanna too). Suiting is sure to be a major player this year, so standouts will be those who push the envelope and figure out how to rework the typically buttoned-up garments.
